New Places to Play - Hendersonville

I am a daily reader of the local Hendersonville newspaper, the Times-News. Recently, the following photo caught my eye.

It was accompanied by a headline and story that further got my attention.

Work has started on the Boyd Park renovation project in downtown Hendersonville.

The park improvement project includes removing the existing fence, asphalt, lighting and a few trees in order to rebuild the two tennis courts.

New fencing and lights will be installed after the courts are repaved and resurfaced.

A handicapped-accessible ramp will be installed along the Bearcat Boulevard side of the park. New lights will also be installed around the Laura E. Corn Mini Golf Course.

The project should be complete by mid-November to early December. For more information, call the Hendersonville Public Works Department at 828-697-3084.

Since I have not had any success with the county in adding pickleball at Jackson Park, I thought this article presented an opportunity to work with the city...so I called the listed number. The staff was happy to inform me that pickleball lines will be added to the rebuilt tennis courts at Boyd Park. Even better, they told me that lines have already been added to the new tennis courts at Patton Park.

The bottom line is that Hendersonville (and Henderson County) will have progressed from 0 to at least 4 outdoor public courts after completion of the Boyd Park renovation.  Some, if not all, of these courts will have lights for play at night.

Thank you, Hendersonville!

From the Hendersonville Parks website:

Boyd Park

Located on Highway 25 North (King Street). It features: two tennis courts and a miniature golf course (putt-putt). The tennis courts are currently being renovated.  When finished, we will have a new asphalt surface with standard tennis court lines and pickle ball lines, new lighting, and new fencing.

Patton Park

Located on Highway 25 North. It is comprised of 19 acres and features: 2 baseball fields, basketball courts, 4 racquetball courts, 2 tennis courts, a football field, two pavilions with picnic tables and grills, 2 gazebos, a playground for tots, a one-half mile lighted walking trail, an Olympics-sized swimming pool (open from Memorial Day to Labor Day), bathrooms and a skate park. Our basketball courts and tennis courts just received a new surface treatment and we added pickle ball lines to the tennis courts.  The operating hours for Patton Park and the Skate Park are 7 am-11 pm daily. If you are interested in reserving the pavilion for a private party, please call (828) 697-3084. The large pavilion (next to the pool) is available to rent in four hour increments for $50, if you wish to reserve for the entire day the fee is $100 and the small pavilion (next to the basketball courts) is $25 for four hours, and $50 for the entire day.
