Recognizing Volley Mistakes

Pickleball 411 has new video called 3 Mistakes to Avoid when Volleying. It features top 5.0 player Scott Moore discussing the volley.

Remember, a volley is a return made by hitting the ball before it bounces off the surface. Most volleys occur near at or near the kitchen line. With that in mind, Scott has identified 3 primary mistakes made in the volley game.

With this mistake, three things can happen:
  1. the ball can be hit into the net.
  2. the ball can be hit long.
  3. the ball can be hit high where the opponent can smash it back.

Allowing the ball to get too close to your body reduces the ability to hit the ball downward at your opponent. It also gives your opponent more time to react. The proper position is to hit the ball in front of your body and downward rather than flat.

Reach out into the kitchen to strike the ball downward.

Backing away from the kitchen line allows your opponent to have more angles and larger area to attack as well as more time to react.

Hold your ground and do not retreat during volley rallies.
