This tournament is played on outdoor courts. For those who have never played outside, a whole new set of challenges, like wind and sun, must be managed. The format is slightly different than last year so I cannot offer any advice beyond the description shown in a copy of the e-mail shown below.
A direct link to the registration form is here. It will be available February 2.
Good luck if you enter...and you should!!!
Scene from 2015 Tournament
Hey Pickleballers –
Can you feel it? Spring is coming, I know it is because it’s almost time for the Greater Greenville Senior Sports Classic (GGSSC) Pickleball Tournment! Soon you will be receiving a registration form via email – please be on the look out for it. You may complete the form and send it back to me or register online beginning February 1st at greenvillerec.com, select “Programs”, select “Senior Programs”, select “Greater Greenville Senior Sports Classic”, select “Register Here”. The dates for the GGSSC is April 14 & 15 (Thursday and Friday) for Pickleball and then the following week April 18-22 for all of the other fun events. I wanted to address some issues that we had last year and let you know that we listened to your comments from the survey.
- Outdoor Pickleballs - we have purchased them, they have arrived and we will be using them at both tournaments!
- Age and skill levels - To comply with the South Carolina Senior Sports Classic we will offer an age division tournament on Friday, April 15th broken down into the age categories listed on the registration form. We will also offer a skill level tournament on Thursday, April 14th (you will be seeded according to your points with the USAPA), however you must still be 50+ years old. This system is implemented for those who are serious about competing at the state and national levels of the senior games. State and nationals go strictly by age divisions and the GGSSC is sanctioned under the South Carolina Senior Sports Classic and the National Senior Games. You don’t have to qualify at local games (like the GGSSC) to go to the State Games (local games are held mainly for awareness and participation statewide), so this gives the local games more leeway to offer different events. You do have to qualify at the state level to advance to the nationals (top 4 in each event, each age category and gender). For consideration to those players who want to advance to state and national levels, we understand that you want to play people in your age division for this tournament, therefore we are giving you this option (some matches will need to be combined due to low participation in that certain age group, however we will do our best to keep you close in age and medals and ribbons will be awarded for each age division).
- Trophies & Medals - For the skill level tournament on the 14th we will award trophies to the winners of each category. For the age division tournament we will award medals (1st place) and ribbons (2nd & 3rd) to the winners in their age divisions.
- Attached below is a link to the Greater Greenville Convention & Business Bureau - it has a list of local restaurant and hotels in the area. To select a hotel near Gower Park in the “location” tab select “hotels by Area” then “TD Convention Center/Haywood Rd”. To select restaurants in the Gower Park area select the “restaurant” tab, select “by location”, select “TD Convention Center/Haywood Rd”.
- We will still offer snacks, fruit, beverages and pizza for lunch both days, as well as a goody bag from our sponsor (Walgreens) and a GGSSC t-shirt.
Please know that our main goal is to provide a fun, competitive tournament for everyone and we look forward to seeing all of you again this year. Feel free to contact me if you have any questions or concerns.
See you all in April!
