The news release:

For Immediate Release

Major Pickleball Tournament Registration Opens March 1

For the first time, a major pickleball tournament will come to the North Carolina Mountains this summer.  Epic Pickleball and its partners will hold the tournament at Xcel Sportsplex in Fletcher on July 6-8. The Land of the Sky Pickleball Tournament is expected to draw about 300 competitors including some of the top players in the world.  Registration begins March 1 and is expected to fill quickly.

Pickleball is a paddle sport played on a badminton-sized court and combines elements of tennis, badminton, and table tennis.  Its straightforward rules make it easy to learn by players of all ages and abilities.  It can also be a challenging, fast-paced, and competitive game, especially for top athletes with experience.

Pickleball is the fastest growing sport in America with nearly 3 million players nation-wide.  Growth of the game in the NC Mountains has mirrored the national trend.  The area has an estimated 800-1,000 players of which more than 50% are in the counties around Hendersonville and Asheville.

Xcel Sportsplex is a 100,000 square foot athletic facility that specializes in volleyball, basketball, and the Parisi Speed School.  The tournament will utilize its indoor space for 18 pickleball courts.

Epic Pickleball is an Asheville based company specializing in pickleball oriented activities such as vacations and tournaments.  David Kelly and Yira Pia Sanchez have partnered with Hendersonville-based Paul Aaron to manage the tournament and associated events.  Selkirk Sport and Burntshirt Vineyards are current sponsors. The tournament is actively seeking sponsors to help with promoting the event.

Registration for the Land of the Sky Pickleball Tournament is done through Pickleballtournaments.com.  Please contact David Kelly at (646) 296-7830 with any questions.
